I meant to reply sooner, but I wanted to try your idea first and see how it actually felt in practice.
I used the shorter setup for the desk and moved the lamp over by the window, and somehow the room immediately seemed calmer and easier to use.
It is strange how one small change can make the whole evening feel less cluttered. I kept the top surface nearly empty, added one plant, and put the extra notebooks away in a drawer.
That finally gave me a space where I could focus without wanting to get up every few minutes. I even finished that reading list I had been putting off, which surprised me, because I assumed I would get distracted again.
The only thing I still need to fix is the chair height, since it feels just slightly off after about an hour. Other than that, your suggestion was solid, and somewhere between tidying up and YTr8aWBvTRh shifting things around, the room became much more comfortable.
