Your Road Kit Courtesy of AAA is on its Way

I think the key to getting the crust right is to chill the butter beforehand and work it into the flour until it resembles coarse meal. You want small pea-sized pieces remaining because those create steam pockets during baking. For the filling I usually do about six cups of sliced apples mixed with a tablespoon of lemon juice half a cup of sugar and a teaspoon of cinnamon. Let it sit for fifteen minutes before adding to the crust. The bottom rack position works best for even browning. I usually bake at 375 for about fifty minutes but check around forty-five. The juices should be bubbling and the top golden brown. Let it cool for at least two hours before slicing so the filling sets properly. You can also add a tablespoon of flour to the filling if the apples seem particularly juicy and that helps thicken things up nicely.

The trailhead is about three miles past the ranger station on the left side. There is a small gravel lot that fits maybe a dozen cars. The main loop is about four miles with moderate elevation gain. The first mile is the steepest but it levels out after the creek crossing. There are some nice views of the valley about halfway when you reach the ridge. I would recommend wearing sturdy shoes because there are some rocky sections near the top. The trail is well marked with blue blazes but I still bring a map just in case. There is a nice picnic spot at the three-mile mark with a bench overlooking a small pond. Cell service is spotty once you get past the first mile so download the map beforehand. The best time to go is early morning before it gets too warm and the crowds arrive.
