So I finally got around to trying that sourdough starter everyone keeps talking about. Day one felt easy — just flour and water. Day two I thought I killed it because nothing happened. Day three there were tiny bubbles and it smelled a little like yogurt. By day five it was doubling in size after every feeding. I named it Bernard. My kitchen counter looks like a science lab now with jars everywhere and a feeding schedule taped to the fridge. My neighbor laughed and said I was basically growing a pet. I told her at least this one doesn't need to go outside. I've been baking a loaf every weekend and the crust crackles when it comes out of the oven. The inside is chewy and tangy. I gave one to my friend and she asked for the recipe. I didn't have the heart to tell her it's a whole relationship now. Anyway if you want some starter just say the word.

Hey! I finally caved and started that vegetable garden I kept talking about. I built three raised beds over the weekend and filled them with soil from the local nursery. I planted tomatoes, bell peppers, basil, and a row of zucchini because my sister swore they're foolproof. I also put in some cucumber seeds along a little trellis. Everything looked great for the first week and then the squirrels discovered my tomatoes. They took one bite out of each one and left them on the ground. I tried sprinkling cayenne pepper around the beds and that seemed to help for about two days. Then I caught a squirrel literally licking the pepper off like it was a snack. I bought some mesh netting and now the whole setup looks like a small fortress. My dad laughed and said I should just grow things squirrels don't like. I told him squirrels like everything apparently. Anyway I'll let you know if I actually get to eat anything I planted. The basil is doing well so far so at least I'll have pesto.
